QUESTIONS

Questions people ask

  • What's the difference between a letter of offer and an employment contract?

A letter of offer is the shorter document you send first: it confirms the role, employment type, start date, pay and any conditions of the offer. The employment contract sets out the full terms in detail. Contractam generates both from the same answers, so the two documents never contradict each other.

  • Is a letter of offer legally binding in Australia?

Yes — once your candidate accepts it, a letter of offer can form a binding contract of employment. That's exactly why a copy-pasted letter is risky: a wrong pay rate or a missing condition can't simply be corrected after the candidate has accepted.

  • Can't I just use a free Word template I found online?

You can, but a downloaded template can hide underpayment risks or clauses written for laws that have since changed. Contractam gives you the ease of a template with a letter that is generated for your business and checked against current Australian law.

  • What should a letter of offer include?

The position title, employment type, start date, pay, hours and work location, plus any conditions the offer depends on — such as reference checks, a police check or proof of the right to work — and how long the offer stays open. Contractam asks for each of these, so nothing is left out.

  • Do I still need a full employment contract?

Best practice is to send both: the letter of offer to secure your candidate, and a full employment contract before their first day. You can generate a matching employment contract template from the same answers.

  • How long does it take?

About 3–4 minutes from the first question to the finished letter, which you download straight away as a PDF or Word file. It's free to generate your letter of offer, with no credit card required.
